This October, we’re bringing something special to Port Fairy — a full day dedicated to connection, creativity, and community for LGBTQIA+ young people across the south-west. The Yumcha Youth Day Camp will be held on Thursday 2 October from 9am–4pm at the Port Fairy Yacht Club, and it’s completely free to attend.
Why this day matters
For many LGBTQIA+ young people, spaces where they can truly be themselves and connect with others are rare and precious. Engagement and belonging aren’t just nice to have — they’re vital. Research shows that when young people feel supported and connected, their mental health, confidence, and overall wellbeing thrive.
That’s why Yumcha groups have been such an important part of the south-west. They provide opportunities to come together, share experiences, and build friendships in a safe, welcoming environment. This Day Camp is a chance to celebrate that spirit on a bigger scale — bringing together young people from Warrnambool, Hamilton, Portland and everywhere in between.
What’s happening on the day
The program is packed with activities to spark creativity and connection. From workshops led by OneDay Studios, to art sessions, to just hanging out and making new friends — the day is all about fun and community. Every participant will also receive a take-home bag, and lunch is provided. Transport support is available to make sure as many young people as possible can get involved.
Looking ahead
We’re excited to see the energy and friendships that will come from this event. Getting together face-to-face is a powerful reminder that no one is alone — and that when young people feel supported and seen, incredible things happen.
The Yumcha Youth Day Camp is more than just a day out — it’s about creating lasting connections and celebrating the strength of our LGBTQIA+ communities across the south-west.
