June marks Pride Month — a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, recognise the progress that has been made toward equality and inclusion, and acknowledge that for many people, the journey toward genuine safety, acceptance and belonging is still ongoing.
At Brophy, Pride Month matters because inclusion, respect and safety sit at the heart of the work we do every day.
Across our programs and services, we work alongside people from a wide range of backgrounds, identities and lived experiences. That includes LGBTQIA+ young people, adults, families, carers, staff and community members who deserve to feel seen, respected and supported exactly as they are.
As a Rainbow Tick accredited organisation, Brophy is committed to creating environments where LGBTQIA+ people feel safe, welcomed and affirmed. That commitment goes beyond symbolic gestures or awareness campaigns. It is reflected in the way we deliver services, the way we support young people and families, and the way we strive to build a workplace culture grounded in dignity, respect and inclusion.
Importantly, Pride Month is also about visibility.
For many LGBTQIA+ people — particularly young people in regional communities — simply seeing visible signs of inclusion and support can make a meaningful difference. It can help reduce feelings of isolation, create stronger connections to support services and reinforce that they are valued members of the community.
We know that LGBTQIA+ communities continue to experience higher rates of discrimination, social exclusion, mental health challenges and barriers to accessing support. We also know that inclusive and affirming environments can have a profound impact on wellbeing, confidence and safety.
That’s why allyship matters too.
Being an ally doesn’t need to be complicated or performative. Often, it’s about the everyday actions that help create safer and more inclusive spaces for others. That can include:
- Listening respectfully to people’s experiences and identities
- Using inclusive language
- Challenging discriminatory behaviour or comments when we see them
- Continuing to learn and build understanding
- Creating environments where people feel safe to be themselves
- Supporting policies, practices and conversations that promote inclusion and equity
At Brophy, we know that meaningful inclusion is built through culture, relationships and everyday behaviour, not just awareness days.
Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, recognise the strength and contribution of LGBTQIA+ communities and continue important conversations about inclusion, allyship and culturally safe practice.
We are proud to support and stand alongside LGBTQIA+ communities across the south-west — not just during Pride Month, but throughout the entire year.
Because everybody deserves to feel safe being themselves. Everybody deserves respect. And everybody deserves to know they belong.
