For Karen and Jason, foster care started with one simple belief: every child deserves a fair go.
Karen, who is blind, says she never let her disability define what she could offer as a carer — and she’s passionate about encouraging others not to rule themselves out.
“From the moment I started the process of becoming a foster carer, they were very supportive,” Karen said.
“I knew I could do it, I was up to the challenge.”
Foster care is for people from all walks of life
Karen hopes her story reassures others who may be unsure whether they’re the “right fit” for foster care.
“If you have a disability and you know you’re up to the challenge, go for it,” she said.
Jason agrees.
“Don’t let it stop you.”
Their message is simple: what matters most is patience, care and a willingness to give children a safe and supportive home.
The power of the little things
Karen and Jason’s journey began many years ago when they welcomed kinship children into their home. What started as a family commitment soon grew into a deep passion for supporting children who needed safety, stability and care.
“We really enjoyed looking after and giving the children a fair go,” Jason said.
One of the biggest surprises for the couple has been how much the “little things” matter.
Moments many families might take for granted — going to the movies, visiting the beach or heading to the pool — can be huge milestones for children in care.
“Just little things, you get so much joy at seeing their face,” Jason explained.
One moment that stands out is a young boy in their care who, after a difficult start in life, went on to become school captain.
“It was a huge moment for him,” Jason said.
Support every step of the way
Karen and Jason are quick to highlight the support they’ve received throughout their fostering journey.
“The support that you get from Brophy is exceptional,” Karen said.
From the first application through to ongoing care, they say the consistent check-ins and professional guidance have made a real difference.
“They come in at least once a week and have a chat to you, see if there’s any problems,” Karen explained.
Jason agrees.
“They’re very supportive right the way through from the time that you first apply to be a foster carer. It’s a friendly, interesting journey and at the end quite rewarding.”
There’s a type of care to suit everyone
One of the key messages Karen and Jason want people to understand is that foster care is flexible.
When you apply, you can choose the type of care that suits your lifestyle – whether that’s emergency, respite, short-term or long-term care.
“The choice is always yours,” Karen said.
Children of all ages need support — from babies through to teenagers — and every contribution makes a difference.
Have you thought about becoming a carer?
Karen and Jason’s story is a reminder that foster carers come from all walks of life – and that what matters most is the willingness to provide care, stability and patience.
There’s a type of foster care to suit every lifestyle – and every child deserves the chance to thrive.
