Brophy is proud to support Bisexual Visibility Day, an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and increase understanding of bisexual people and communities.
Visibility might sound like a simple thing, but feeling seen, understood and accepted can make a real difference.
Bisexuality doesn’t look the same for everyone. A bisexual person doesn’t necessarily experience attraction equally across genders. They don’t need to have dated people of different genders. And being in a relationship with someone of one gender doesn’t erase their bisexuality. For young people in particular, having space to explore and understand identity without pressure is incredibly important.
There doesn’t need to be a deadline for figuring everything out. Some people know how they identify from a young age. Others might find the words that describe them later. Some may use different language over time as they learn more about themselves.
What matters is that people are given the opportunity to be themselves without judgement.
Creating spaces where people feel they belong
Supporting bisexual young people doesn’t require having all the answers.
Often, it starts with the small things: listening without judgement, not making assumptions about someone’s sexuality based on their current or previous relationships, using the language a person uses to describe themselves, and challenging stereotypes when we hear them.
It can also mean recognising that someone shouldn’t have to repeatedly prove or explain their identity to have it respected.
For Brophy, it means we’re committed to creating inclusive spaces means ensuring young people know that they are welcome, regardless of their sexuality, gender identity, background or circumstances.
It means creating environments where people can talk openly when they want to and where they can also choose not to.
Visibility is about more than being seen
Bisexual Visibility Day is a celebration, but it is also a reminder of the importance of belonging.
Seeing bisexual people represented openly and positively can help challenge stereotypes and remind people who might be questioning their own identity that they are not alone.
This Bisexual Visibility Day, we celebrate bisexual people in our communities and reaffirm something that should be true every day: everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and able to be themselves.
